Michelly Alencar advocates for gun permits for women under protective orders

Michelly Alencar, a councilwoman and state deputy candidate, has advocated for the temporary granting of firearm permits to women over 18 who are under urgent protective orders. Speaking at the Cuiabá City Council, Alencar argued that this measure provides a necessary defense alternative for victims facing daily threats from aggressors.

The proposal references Bill 3.272/2024, introduced by former Senator Rosana Martinelli, which seeks to amend the Disarmament Statute. Under this proposal, victims could be granted permits if they demonstrate technical proficiency in handling firearms, psychological aptitude, and meet other legal requirements.

Alencar cited the recent murder of 29-year-old Mirella dos Santos as an example of the risks women face, noting that Mato Grosso has recorded 34 cases of feminicide this year. She emphasized that many victims had already sought help or held protective orders prior to their deaths.
