Michigan AG Dana Nessel urges Jewish Democrats to prioritize global needs

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel sparked controversy during a Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus event by suggesting that Jewish Democrats have a “moral imperative” to prioritize the “needs of the world” over their own self-interest and security.

Nessel cited the biblical story of Queen Esther, arguing that just as Esther risked her life to save the Jewish people in Persia, modern Jews may need to “sacrifice the comfort, safety and security, and even the very future of our own people in exchange for the opportunity to save the rest of humanity.” She questioned the priority of defending Israel if the planet becomes uninhabitable, while urging Jewish voters to remain loyal to the Democratic Party.

Critics, including Rabbi Steven Burg of Aish, argued that Nessel’s interpretation of the Purim text was inaccurate, stating the story was specifically about saving the Jewish people from an antisemite rather than sacrificing their future for others. Nessel had previously skipped the Michigan Democratic convention, citing safety concerns and fears of harassment due to rising antisemitism.
