Michigan antitrust lawsuit against major oil companies dismissed
A U.S. District Judge has dismissed an antitrust lawsuit filed by Michigan against several major oil companies and the American Petroleum Institute. The suit, filed in January by Attorney General Dana Nessel, accused the defendants of conspiring to suppress competition from renewable energy and electric vehicles to keep consumers reliant on fossil fuels.
U.S. District Judge Jane Beckering ruled that the state failed to establish a sufficient link between the alleged conspiracy and energy overcharges. The judge noted that the distance between the companies' cooperative efforts and the resulting price increases was too great to prove proximate cause, citing various other factors such as supply and demand and technological developments that influence energy costs.
This dismissal follows similar legal setbacks in other states, including Delaware, New Jersey, and New York, where courts have rejected comparable climate-related antitrust claims.
