Michigan approves $50 million in grants for Copperwood Project

The Michigan Strategic Fund Board has approved $50 million in performance-based grants to support the development of the Copperwood Mine Project in Gogebic County. The funding, administered by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is divided into two primary segments: approximately $44.97 million for Copperwood Resources Inc. to cover on-site development costs, and roughly $5.03 million for the Gogebic County Road Commission to address local infrastructure.

Additionally, the Michigan Department of Transportation has awarded a $7.54 million Transportation Economic Development Fund grant to the road commission. These combined funds will provide approximately $12.57 million for the reconstruction and upgrade of County Road 519. The 12.8-mile road currently holds a low safety rating and requires total reconstruction to support the project and improve regional access, utility infrastructure, and broadband connectivity.
