Michigan candidates debate election security and policy for 2026

As the 2026 election cycle progresses in Michigan, candidates for major state offices are focusing on election security, economic policy, and institutional stability.

During a candidate forum hosted by the League of Women Voters, Michigan Secretary of State contenders debated methods to bolster voter trust. Republican nominee Anthony Forlini emphasized his experience and the need for efficient vote tallying, while Democrat Garlin Gilchrist proposed a rapid response system to combat misinformation. Libertarian Christine Sloan highlighted public safety concerns, and Green Party candidate Eric Borregard suggested that security worries may be overstated.

In the gubernatorial race, Jocelyn Benson has secured endorsements from the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union and National Security Leaders for America. Supporters cited her integrity in managing the Secretary of State office. Conversely, her Republican opponent, Congressman John James, has received endorsements from several law enforcement organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 124 and the Police Officers Association of Michigan.

Business leaders in Michigan are also being encouraged to support election administration. Experts noted that the state’s decentralized system, which utilizes paper ballots and the Qualified Voter File, provides significant safeguards for accuracy and auditing.
