Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham defends stance on Ohio State rivalry

Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has addressed recent criticism regarding his stance on the rivalry with Ohio State. Following comments made at Big Ten Media Days where he suggested that a rivalry can be intense without requiring personal hatred, Whittingham doubled down on his pragmatic approach.

Whittingham questioned whether expressing hatred would improve the team's chances of winning, stating, “Would we have a better chance of beating them if I hated them more?” He emphasized that while he wants to beat Ohio State more than anyone else, he prefers focusing on preparation and execution over manufactured animosity.

The coach noted that he respects Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and believes in honesty rather than performing fake hostility for television or social media. Whittingham maintained that his focus remains on the importance of the game and the operational discipline required to compete in the rivalry.
