Michigan colleges invest in modern dorms amid enrollment declines

Colleges in Michigan are investing tens of millions of dollars into modernizing student housing to remain competitive amid declining enrollment numbers. Institutions such as Ferris State University, Western Michigan University, and Eastern Michigan University are replacing aging facilities with new residence halls and apartments.

Ferris State University recently opened the $38 million Stadium Hall, which offers unique views of the campus football stadium. While these projects aim to attract students, many institutions are not increasing total bed capacity; instead, they are replacing old structures or right-sizing facilities to match current and projected enrollment trends.

The push for modernization comes as Michigan faces a projected 20% drop in high school graduates by 2041. State-wide postsecondary enrollment has already seen a 27% decline over the last two decades, with specific net enrollment drops of 30% at Ferris, 25% at Western, and 42% at Eastern Michigan University over the past decade.
