Michigan couple loses $66,000 in real estate scam
A couple in Michigan fell victim to a sophisticated real estate scam while attempting to purchase a four-bedroom condominium in Hudsonville, near Grand Rapids. Brian and Wendy VanDoeselaar were in the final stages of buying a $460,000 property when they received an email instructing them to wire over $66,000 to a specific bank account to cover deposits and closing costs.
The scammers utilized advanced technology to impersonate their loan officer, even using a voice that sounded identical to the actual employee during a follow-up confirmation call. The fraud was only discovered when the legitimate loan officer provided a different closing statement a day before the transaction was set to finalize. The incident highlights a growing trend of real estate-related fraud involving digital impersonation.
