Michigan declares Preparedness Month amid severe weather and power outages

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared September as Preparedness Month following a season of severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding. The Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division is urging residents to develop family emergency plans, assemble supply kits, and learn local emergency response protocols.

In Lapeer County, a Prepare Fair is scheduled for September 12 to help residents build kits and meet first responders. Additionally, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is advising citizens to include pets and livestock in their emergency preparations.

Separately, severe weather in Southeast Michigan has left over 250,000 residents without power. DTE Energy reported that while heavy rain and winds caused widespread outages, they expect 90% of affected customers to have power restored by Saturday.
