Michigan Democrats face internal divisions over Gaza and Israel

Michigan Democrats are facing internal divisions as they prepare for the November elections. While party leaders aim to focus on economic issues and the cost of living to challenge Republican Mike Rogers, internal disputes regarding the conflict in Gaza and Israel have complicated the party's efforts.

Following a bruising Senate primary where Abdul El-Sayed defeated U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, tensions have risen within the party. El-Sayed, who would be the first Muslim U.S. Senator if elected, has criticized Israel’s military operations in Gaza while denouncing antisemitism. This stance has led several prominent Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten and State Rep. Jeremy Moss, to withhold their support for him at this time.

During a recent gathering in West Michigan, attendees expressed frustration over the party's direction, with some criticizing leadership for prioritizing foreign policy over local economic concerns. Scholten noted that the responsibility to unify the party lies with the top of the ticket.
