Michigan expected to start freshman Tommy Carr at quarterback
Michigan is expected to name true freshman Tommy Carr as the starting quarterback for the upcoming Week 8 game against No. 6 Indiana. The decision follows Carr’s impactful second-half performance against Penn State, where he relieved sophomore Bryce Underwood to lead a 21-18 comeback victory.
Underwood, who entered the season as a highly touted recruit with a significant NIL package, has struggled with consistency. Through six games, he has completed 58.1% of his passes for 924 yards, five touchdowns, and six interceptions. In contrast, Carr completed five of seven passes for 47 yards and added a 12-yard rushing touchdown during his relief appearance last week.
Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has remained cautious in public comments, stating that the team has a “good plan in place” without officially naming the starter. Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti has noted that his team is preparing for the possibility of facing the freshman.
