Michigan farmer's doorstop identified as iron meteorite

A 10-kilogram rock used as a barn doorstop for decades in Edmore, Michigan, has been scientifically confirmed as an iron meteorite. The object first appeared on the farm property in 1939, though its origin remained unverified for years.

Following a separate meteorite fall in Hamburg, Michigan, in 2018, the farm's owners sought scientific analysis from the University of Michigan. Professor of geology Mona Sirbescu examined the triangular specimen, which measures 17 by 20 by 23 centimeters.

The analysis revealed a light brown fusion crust and indentations consistent with atmospheric entry. The specimen was officially classified as an iron meteorite belonging to the IIIAB group.
