Michigan football remains undefeated through nonconference play

The Michigan Wolverines football team has maintained an undefeated record through nonconference play under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. The team’s 3-0 start includes a controversial last-second victory over Western Michigan, a ranked win against Oklahoma, and a 52-17 victory over UTEP.

While the defense has been a standout performer—ranking second in the Big Ten for sacks and tackles for loss—the offense has shown inconsistency. Performance has largely fluctuated based on quarterback Bryce Underwood’s play.

Coach Whittingham has identified a lack of early-game focus as a primary concern. He noted that the team struggled with intensity during the first halves of games against Western Michigan and UTEP, suggesting that the team’s relative youth may contribute to these performance fluctuations. Whittingham emphasized the need for the team to maintain a consistent level of play regardless of the opponent as they enter conference play.
