Michigan football: Whittingham expands Underwood's role and secures key recruit

New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is implementing strategic changes to the team's offensive and recruiting approaches. Regarding the offense, Whittingham indicated that quarterback Bryce Underwood will see an expanded role, particularly in a run-heavy RPO (run-pass option) system designed by offensive coordinator Jason Beck. While Underwood utilized his dual-threat abilities during his freshman season, the new scheme is expected to utilize his running capabilities more frequently in critical situations, such as the red zone.

On the recruiting front, Whittingham secured a significant commitment from Monsanna Torbert, a top-100 defensive back from Cincinnati, Ohio. Torbert chose Michigan over rival Ohio State, marking an early success for Whittingham’s recruiting efforts in the Midwest. Torbert is expected to be a potential starter for the Wolverines by 2027 as current secondary players prepare for the NFL.
