Michigan Ford dealer launches drone delivery for auto parts

Jack Demmer Ford has launched a state-funded drone delivery network to transport automotive parts in the metro Detroit area. The initiative, which utilizes a 12-mile service radius, aims to reduce traffic congestion and delivery delays for car repairs.

The program is supported by a $740,000 grant from Michigan’s Advanced Air Mobility Activation Fund, a joint effort involving the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan Aeronautics Commission, the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Operations are being conducted in partnership with Brighton-based drone manufacturer blueflite and Detroit-based airspace software company Airspace Link. The flights utilize the blueflite Cobalt 461, an aircraft that holds Department of War Conditional Approval and is on the FAA’s Section 44807 approved list. Recent demonstrations included autonomous flights carrying oil filters across Newburgh Road near Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant.
