Michigan GOP candidates split over proposed Canada trade tariffs

Michigan political candidates are offering diverging views on proposed U.S. tariffs against Canada and their potential impact on the state's automotive industry.

Republican gubernatorial nominee John James has called for negotiators from both nations to return to the bargaining table to avoid an escalating trade dispute. James warned that the current trajectory could harm Michigan's economy, noting that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated Canada will match U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar starting September 8. James emphasized that while the partnership is crucial, the status quo must change to protect manufacturing jobs.

In contrast, Senate candidate Mike Rogers defended President Donald Trump’s tariff policies during a Fox News interview. Rogers argued that tariffs could protect domestic auto production and provide more opportunities for Michigan workers to build vehicles locally. He characterized Canada as a poor partner, suggesting that the state must protect itself against the influx of Canadian-built vehicles. Rogers stated that Michigan requires a senator capable of negotiating directly with the administration regarding trade policies.
