Michigan House advances dam safety and insurance legislation

The Michigan House of Representatives has moved to pass several legislative priorities ahead of the upcoming general election. Among the key measures is dam safety legislation, which passed the House with a 96-7 vote. The bill aims to grant state regulators increased oversight of dams and strengthen disaster planning to prevent future infrastructure failures. The legislation now moves to the Michigan Senate for a concurrence vote.

Additionally, the House Insurance Committee, chaired by Representative Mike Harris, is discussing a bipartisan auto insurance package. The proposed bills seek to lower the minimum required personal injury protection coverage from $250,000 to $50,000 for most drivers. Proponents suggest this change could help address high insurance costs by decoupling auto insurance from health insurance-style coverage models.
