Michigan House District 3 primary centers on immigration and healthcare

Voters in Michigan will cast ballots on August 4 in a primary that could influence control of the U.S. House. In the competitive 3rd Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Hillary Scholten is running for a third term after flipping the seat in the previous cycle.

Scholten highlights legislation she introduced, the Main Street BRIDGE Act, which would require the Small Business Administration and the Minority Business Development Agency to coordinate grant programs for local businesses. She also points to her record on capping prescription‑drug and insulin costs and expanding Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Republican contenders include veteran and business owner Ryan Cushman, who advocates Medicaid expansion, regular program audits and eliminating co‑pays and deductibles, and meteorologist Terri DeBoer, who pledges to lower healthcare costs, cut taxes and reduce regulations on small businesses. Fund‑raising totals show Scholten with more than $2.2 million raised and $1.3 million cash on hand, DeBoer with over $460 thousand raised and $361 thousand cash, while Cushman trails behind.
