Michigan housing reform package faces legislative hurdles

Michigan lawmakers are considering the Housing Readiness Package, a nine-bill legislative effort aimed at addressing housing affordability by reducing regulatory barriers and expanding property rights. The package includes measures such as HB 5529 and HB 5530, which propose establishing a maximum minimum lot size of 1,500 square feet for single-family homes in metropolitan areas to lower development costs and increase supply.

While the package remains in legislative committee, housing advocates are leveraging recent primary election results to build momentum. Supporters note that many lawmakers who cosponsored the reforms were reelected decisively. However, the legislation faces opposition from local government township associations concerned about the potential loss of local zoning authority and control over permitting processes.

In related efforts, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has previously signed legislation regarding single-stair reform and established the state’s first Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program to match federal credits.
