Michigan residents receive misprinted IDs featuring stranger’s photo

Approximately 8,200 Michigan residents received misprinted enhanced driver’s licenses and state ID cards featuring a stranger’s face. The error occurred on cards produced on August 26 due to a mistake by the state’s vendor, Idemia.

Instead of the correct cardholder information, the lower-right corner of the IDs displayed a stock photo of a Black man accompanied by a fictitious date of birth. The Michigan Secretary of State’s Office clarified that the misprinted information was generic and did not belong to any other resident.

The image used was a stock photo intended to serve as an example of what an enhanced Michigan license looks like. Residents reported receiving the cards with the smiling stranger's image and incorrect personal details in the corner of the document.
