Michigan leads US in dog bite insurance claim risks
A new study by Gamble Mind has identified the regions in the United States with the highest risk of dog bite-related insurance claims. Michigan leads the nation, with residents facing annual odds of one in 7,073 of being involved in a claim. The state recorded 1,432 claims in 2025, a population-adjusted rate 69% above the national average.
In New York City, reported dog bites increased by nearly 25% between 2024 and 2025, rising from 4,041 to 5,049 incidents. Staten Island was identified as the city’s hotspot, with the highest bite rate among boroughs at approximately one bite for every 1,261 residents. While Manhattan and Queens tied for the highest total number of reported bites, Manhattan’s rate per resident was higher than Queens due to its smaller residential population.
According to CDC estimates, approximately 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs annually, with a victim entering an emergency room every 80 seconds.
