Michigan Legislature Advances Corrections Retirement Bill and Homeownership Limits

State Rep. Denise Mentzer re‑introduced a package of nine bills, including a re‑iteration of HB 4667, to give eligible corrections officers a pathway into the Michigan State Police Retirement System. The proposal seeks to improve recruitment and retention of correction workers and to lower long‑term health‑care costs for public employees. Mentzer said, “It is essential that we support our correction workers, and these bills ensure they can retire with dignity.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 6074, which restricts large investment companies that own more than 100 single‑family homes and have a net worth of at least $375 million from acquiring additional units beyond that limit. Violations can incur fines of up to $25,000 per prohibited purchase. Rep. Karl Bohnak explained, “What we’re trying to do is to make housing available for families,” noting the measure targets Michigan’s ongoing housing shortage, especially in the Upper Peninsula. Critics argue the law’s impact may be limited and that investors could circumvent it by creating additional entities.
