Michigan man sentenced to probation after self-defense shooting

A 19-year-old man, Martinez Long, has been sentenced to two years of probation after a self-defense incident at the Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, Michigan. While legal counsel and the court evaluated that Long acted in self-defense or the defense of others during a July 3 altercation, he was charged with carrying a concealed firearm.

The incident involved an altercation between Cameron Watkins and Keonte Seaborn, during which Watkins fatally shot Seaborn. Long’s attorney stated that Long did not instigate the fight and carried the weapon for protection. The judge criticized Long for his “poor judgment” in bringing a firearm into the mall.

Under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, Long may avoid a criminal record if he successfully completes his probation. Michigan law requires a Concealed Pistol License for individuals over 21 to carry a concealed handgun.
