Michigan National Guard deaf dog prepares for deployment
Axel, a three-year-old Dogo Argentino born deaf, is preparing to deploy with the Michigan National Guard. Originally surrendered to a shelter as a puppy because his owners could not manage his hearing impairment, Axel was adopted by Sgt. Mollie Karazim, a religious affairs specialist.
To accommodate his deafness, Karazim developed a communication system using visual cues and hand signals. Axel has mastered over 50 commands, including several in sign language. He serves as the ministry dog for the 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment, working alongside soldiers in the field and in Humvees while wearing a specialized vest and collar for his duties.
