Michigan nurse charged with child abuse of premature infant

Kieran Ansley, a 43-year-old former nurse at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has been charged with four counts of child abuse. The charges follow an incident involving a four-month-old infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The infant, who was born prematurely in November 2025, was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital in April. However, her mother discovered multiple bruises and a dark discoloration on the baby’s tongue upon returning to the unit. A subsequent skeletal survey revealed multiple fractures, including broken bones in both legs. Court documents state that the findings resulted in a diagnosis of “pediatric physical abuse.”

Ansley faces two felony counts of second-degree child abuse, which carry a maximum of 10 years in prison, and two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree child abuse. Hospital officials confirmed that Ansley was terminated following the allegations. He has appeared in Grand Rapids District Court and remains free on bond while wearing an electronic tether.
