Supreme Court declines Michigan voting amendment appeal

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an emergency application from Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan, which sought to place a citizens-only voting amendment on the state’s November ballot.

The group’s proposal aims to require proof of U.S. citizenship for voters and implement photo identification requirements. Although the group collected over 700,000 signatures—surpassing the required 446,198—the Michigan Board of State Canvassers deadlocked 2-2 on certifying the measure. A random sampling of signatures conducted by state officials resulted in a count that fell short of the threshold required for ballot qualification.

Americans for Citizen Voting-Michigan accused the Michigan Secretary of State of delaying the review process for over five months, leaving insufficient time to rectify signature disputes. Following Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s refusal to intervene, the federal courts will not weigh in on the matter before the state's ballot deadlines.
