Michigan Senate candidates El-Sayed and Rogers clash in heated first debate

Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers engaged in a heated televised debate in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as part of the competitive race for the U.S. Senate. The debate was marked by intense personal attacks, with Rogers accusing El-Sayed of being soft on terrorism and questioning his medical credentials. Rogers also alleged that El-Sayed's mother worked for an organization that was once indicted for funneling money to Al-Qaeda.

El-Sayed countered by framing Rogers as an out-of-touch millionaire and a ‘sock puppet’ for the Trump administration. During the exchange, El-Sayed addressed questions regarding the October 7 Hamas attacks, stating he had condemned them, while Rogers accused him of failing to issue a formal statement on the anniversary.

Donald Trump intensified the conflict following the debate, posting on Truth Social that Rogers ‘completely obliterated’ El-Sayed. Trump further attacked El-Sayed by misnaming him and labeling him a ‘Jihadist lunatic’ and ‘terrorist sympathizer.’ El-Sayed responded by accusing Trump of using his Muslim faith and name to distract voters from pressing economic issues.
