Abdul El-Sayed faces scrutiny in Michigan Senate race

Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, is facing intense scrutiny over past social media posts and his association with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. El-Sayed recently apologized to the Michigan Jewish Democratic Caucus for remarks made following a March attack on a synagogue in Detroit, where he had attempted to provide context regarding Middle Eastern conflicts.

Republican opponent Mike Rogers has utilized these controversies in campaign advertisements, targeting El-Sayed’s past comments and his relationship with Piker, who has made controversial statements regarding American Jews and the September 11 attacks. Additionally, resurfaced deleted posts from El-Sayed comparing the September 11 attacks to the COVID-19 death toll have drawn renewed criticism.

Despite these challenges, recent polling from EPIC MRA shows El-Sayed leading Rogers 47% to 43%. Donald Trump has also criticized El-Sayed, labeling him ‘out of it’ and warning that socialist candidates could harm the Democratic Party in the upcoming midterm elections.
