Michigan Senate repasses nine bills vetoed by Governor Whitmer

The legislation, which had previously passed both chambers during a prior term under Democratic control, was stalled due to a dispute over whether the House should transmit the bills to the governor after a change in legislative leadership.

Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks stated that the Senate is returning the bills to the governor’s desk, noting that the policies remain a priority. While many of the votes fell along party lines, a specific package aimed at granting corrections and conservation workers access to the state police pension system received some Republican support. Proponents argued the move would address staffing shortages in state prisons, though some critics expressed skepticism regarding the long-term implications of the pension changes.
