Michigan upsets No. 2 North Carolina in field hockey season opener

No. 14 Michigan defeated No. 2 University of North Carolina 2-1 in overtime during the season opener of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Winston-Salem.

After a scoreless first half, Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the third quarter via a penalty stroke from Eva Bernardy. North Carolina responded in the fourth quarter when Coco Courtright set up Charly Bruder for a goal, forcing the game into overtime. Michigan ultimately secured the victory in the 64th minute with a goal from Sofia Ghanbari.

UNC head coach Erin Matson noted that the team is focusing on growth and steadiness during the early weeks of the season, particularly as the lineup features several new players. This marks the first time the Tar Heels have lost their season opener since 2021.
