Michèle Barzach, former French Health Minister, dies at 83

Michèle Barzach, the former French Minister of Health, passed away in Paris on Monday morning following a stroke, according to her daughter, Tatiana Renard-Barzach.

A gynecologist by training, Barzach served in the Jacques Chirac government during the cohabitation period between 1986 and 1988. During her tenure, she was instrumental in launching France's first public policies to combat the AIDS epidemic, including passing legislation that authorized advertising for condoms.

Born in Casablanca in 1943 to a North African Jewish family, Barzach held several significant political roles. She served as a national delegate for social affairs within the Rassemblement pour la République (RPR) and was elected as a deputy for Paris in 1988. She also served as an assistant to Mayor Jacques Chirac until 1995 and presided over UNICEF France from 2012 to 2015.

In 1990, she resigned from the RPR following disagreements regarding the party's direction. Later, in 1996, she co-signed a manifesto for political gender parity alongside Simone Veil.
