Michoacán approves new law for the search of missing persons

The Michoacán State Congress has approved the Law for the Search of Missing Persons, a legislative measure designed to streamline the process of locating disappeared individuals and supporting their families.

A key provision of the new law is the mandate for immediate searches. Authorities are no longer required to wait for a specific period, such as 24, 48, or 72 hours, nor are they required to wait for a formal complaint to be filed before initiating actions.

The legislation aims to strengthen institutional coordination between the Prosecutor's Office, the Search Commission, and various security agencies. It also focuses on improving information exchange, enhancing forensic identification capabilities, and strengthening databases to assist in the localization of missing persons.

Legislators noted that the law was developed through dialogue with search collectives, families, and civil organizations to ensure the legal tools address the practical difficulties faced by those seeking truth and justice.
