Michoacán authorities rescue malnourished spider monkey

Authorities in Michoacán, Mexico, rescued a spider monkey found in a state of severe malnutrition during a search operation in Pajacuarán. The primate was being held in a small birdcage under unhygienic conditions without proper care. Following the operation, which included participation from the National Guard and Profepa, the animal was transferred to the Benito Juárez Zoo in Morelia for specialized veterinary treatment. One individual was detained during the raid.

Separately, the Morelia Zoo reported that it has received 478 rescued or seized animals since October 2021 through coordinated efforts between environmental and security agencies. This year has seen a record 197 animal arrivals. The zoo provides clinical assessment and rehabilitation for various species, including jaguars, tigers, and primates. While some animals are returned to the wild, many require permanent care due to their condition upon rescue.
