Michoacán avocado producers burn 50 tons of fruit over pest concerns

Avocado producers in Michoacán, Mexico, burned approximately 52 tons of fruit originating from Jalisco, Colima, and Nayarit after detecting the presence of the stem and pit borer worm. The shipment, which was destined for a packing plant in Uruapan, was intercepted in the municipality of Peribán.

Producers have established inspection checkpoints at various entrances to Uruapan to prevent the entry of fruit carrying pests. They argue that such infestations pose a severe risk to the local economy and the ability to export to the United States, the region's primary market. The movement has led to tensions with transporters, resulting in temporary blockades and near-confrontations near Pemex facilities.

Local organizations are demanding greater intervention from phytosanitary authorities and packing companies to ensure all incoming shipments meet health standards to avoid potential border closures.
