Michoacán completes rehabilitation of Erongarícuaro canal

The State Fisheries Commission (Compesca) of Michoacán announced the completion of an integral rehabilitation of the Erongarícuaro canal, restoring more than 3.5 km of navigable water that directly connects the community of Erongarícuaro with Lake Pátzcuaro.

Work began in 2025, with the first 2.5 km upgraded earlier and the final kilometre cleared this year. The project proceeded in three phases: opening access using machinery from the Secretariat of Communications and Public Works, a temporary‑employment program coordinated by the Secretariat of the Environment that involved local residents, and a final phase of aquatic‑weed removal and dredging using specialized Compesca equipment.

Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla directed the effort to improve environmental conditions and support lakeside communities. Compesca director Ramón Hernández Orozco said, "La recuperación de este canal permite nuevamente el ingreso de lanchas y canoas, facilita la actividad pesquera, fortalece el turismo y contribuye al rescate de tradiciones como las regatas."

The restored channel is expected to benefit fishermen, tourism service providers and local inhabitants by enhancing mobility, boosting the local economy and aiding the recovery of an important regional ecosystem.
