Michoacán State Congress Honors Mazahua Indigenous Communities and Passes Municipal Reforms

The Michoacán State Congress designated the Mazahua Indigenous Communities with self‑government as recipients of the “Suprema Junta Nacional Americana” decoration, to be awarded in a solemn session on 19 August in Zitácuaro.

In the same legislative period, the Congress approved reforms to the state’s Organic Municipal Law, adding new provisions for municipal planning commissions and granting the appointed municipal president the same rights as elected officials.

The body also incorporated 4 March as the official anniversary of the 1815 Battle of Fort Cóporo, recognizing the historic contribution of the eastern region of the state.

Separately, Morena leader Celeste Ascencio highlighted the importance of grassroots organization at a public assembly in Morelia, while Mayor Alfonso Martínez Alcázar rejected taxi drivers’ demand for exclusive operating zones, labeling the protest political and promising enforcement of regulations.
