Michoacán disarmament event leaves four injured after shotgun accident

Four people were injured during a voluntary firearm disarmament and destruction event in Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán. The incident occurred when a shotgun, which had been surrendered by its owner, accidentally discharged while personnel from the 12th Infantry Battalion were attempting to destroy it using an industrial saw.

The explosion caused shrapnel to strike several bystanders. The injured individuals have been identified as Rubén (56), Jorge Adrián (47), Erasmo (51), and Daniel (35). One victim was treated at the Pátzcuaro Regional Hospital and subsequently discharged.

The State Attorney General's Office of Michoacán has launched an investigation into the accident. While the event was part of a government program to exchange weapons for money, reports indicate the weapon may not have been fully cleared of ammunition before the destruction process began.
