Lake Pátzcuaro restoration advances in Michoacán

The Michoacán state government reported that work on the Lake Pátzcuaro basin has progressed with the intervention of 79 springs and the rehabilitation of more than 2,000 linear metres of canals. The projects removed 132,571 m³ of sediment, cleared 48,000 m² of weed and extracted 200 m³ of stone, while 42 new water springs were discovered and rescued. Over 3.5 km of the Erongarícuaro canal were restored, enabling full boat traffic for local communities. The effort, coordinated by the Secretariat of Communications and Public Works (SCOP), the Organism Operator of Water, Sewerage and Sanitation (OOAPAS) and other agencies, used heavy machinery such as excavators, draglines and aquadozers. The work directly benefited 61 sites across 40 communities in the municipalities of Pátzcuaro, Erongarícuaro, Quiroga, Tzintzuntzan, Salvador Escalante and Nahuatzen, including Ihuatzio, Ojo de Agua, Urandén de Morelos, Isla Pacanda, Chapultepec, La Alberca, Tzentzenguaro and Cucuchucho.
