Michoacán insecurity dominates public concern per recent surveys

A recent El Financiero poll of 500 Michoacán voters finds that 71 % identify insecurity as the leading problem in the state, while 76 % rate the state government's response to security as unsatisfactory and 79 % criticize its fight against organized crime. Corruption also scores poorly, with 67 % expressing a negative view.

The June 2026 Urban Public Safety Survey (ENSU) released by INEGI shows that Uruapan ranks among the Mexican cities with the highest perception of insecurity at 83.1 %, and Morelia’s insecurity perception rose to 70.5 % from 66.1 % in March. In contrast, Lázaro Cárdenas records a lower figure of 33.0 %. Nationwide, the share of adults who feel unsafe in their city fell to 59.8 %. Women report higher insecurity (65.6 % vs. 52.6 % for men). The survey identifies ATMs on public streets, streets themselves, public transport and highways as the locations where people feel most unsafe.
