Michoacán authorities report progress in Carlos Manzo murder case

The investigation into the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo Rodríguez continues to evolve in Michoacán. Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla reported significant progress following the indictment of Ramón Ángel “N”, known as “El R1”, identified as the intellectual author of the crime. However, the Governor emphasized that the case is not closed, noting that an arrest warrant remains active for Manzo’s former head of security.

The assassination has had broader political and security implications for the region. Following the death of Manzo, his widow, Grecia Itzel Quiroz García, assumed the mayoral position and has led the “Movimiento Independiente del Sombrero.” Governor Bedolla noted an evident political alliance between this movement and the Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) party, suggesting Quiroz is positioning herself for a future gubernatorial bid.

Security challenges persist in Michoacán despite the implementation of the “Plan Michoacán por la Paz y la Justicia.” The state has faced significant economic disruptions, including temporary U.S. restrictions on avocado exports due to organized crime interference in the supply chain. While some criminal leaders have been detained, authorities continue to struggle against territorial control by criminal groups affecting various agricultural sectors.
