Michoacán security forces report increased staffing and homicide reductions

Michoacán is implementing significant security measures and operational shifts. According to the State Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the state now has 1.3 police officers per 1,000 inhabitants, exceeding the national average of 1.0. This increased capacity, combined with intelligence and disarmament strategies, has contributed to a 41.8 percent reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides, moving the state out of the top seven entities for this crime.

In 2025, Michoacán led the nation in firearm seizures, recording 1,185 weapons, which accounts for 9.2 percent of the national total. These efforts are part of a broader strategy involving territorial presence and inter-institutional coordination.

On August 19, 2026, President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed a security cabinet operation in Michoacán targeting high-priority objectives. The operation has reportedly led to clashes and road blockades in areas such as Zamora and Pátzcuaro. Local reports suggest the operation may be aimed at the arrest of Heraclio Guerrero Martínez, known as ‘El tío Lako’ of the CJNG, though this remains unconfirmed.

Additionally, government officials are working to strengthen regional ties, with the Secretary of Government, Raúl Zepeda Villaseñor, meeting with municipal presidents from the Los Reyes region to coordinate peace-building and social fabric reinforcement efforts.
