Michoacán Congress bans immediate re‑election and electoral nepotism in constitutional reform

The Congress of the State of Michoacán approved a constitutional amendment that eliminates immediate re‑election for local deputies, municipal presidents, councilors, judges and other elected officials. The reform also prohibits electoral nepotism by barring candidates who have close family or marital ties with the incumbent office‑holder for three years prior to an election.

The amendment aligns Michoacán’s constitution with the federal “Plan B” reform and will take effect for the 2030 electoral cycle. After congressional approval, the decree will be sent to the state’s municipalities for ratification, then forwarded to the governor for publication in the official state gazette.
