Michoacán Attorney General Carlos Torres Piña Takes Leave to Seek Morena Gubernatorial Candidacy

The Congress of the State of Michoacán approved by a wide margin (32 votes in favor, 2 against) the request of Attorney General Carlos Torres Piña for a temporary leave of up to 45 days, beginning on 22 June. Torres Piña said the leave will allow him to pursue a Morena internal coordination role and ultimately seek the party’s candidacy for the 2027 gubernatorial election. He emphasized that the Fiscalía will continue its operations without interruption, noting that his team of vice‑fiscals will maintain ongoing investigations, salary improvements, and other institutional initiatives. During his tenure, the office has pursued major corruption cases, criminal networks and advances in victims’ rights, which he highlighted as part of his legacy before entering the political arena.
