Mexico reports significant declines in intentional homicide rates

Mexico is reporting significant declines in intentional homicide rates across several states, according to recent government and statistical data. In the State of Mexico, INEGI data indicates that 2025 saw the lowest number of homicides in 15 years. The daily average of victims in the state dropped from 6.6 to 2.7 between September 2024 and July 2026, a 59% reduction.

Other regions are seeing similar trends. Michoacán has reported a 41.8% decrease in its daily average of intentional homicides, and Quintana Roo saw a 60.4% reduction during the first seven months of 2026. On August 13, 2026, the national Security Cabinet reported a record low of only 20 homicides across the entire country in a single day.

However, analysts urge caution regarding these figures. A report from México Evalúa suggests that the decline in homicides may mask a transformation in violence rather than its disappearance. The report notes that while direct homicides have decreased, other forms of lethal violence, such as disappearances and other crimes against life, have risen significantly. Furthermore, the overall lethal violence rate remains 26% higher than 2015 levels, and security perception remains low in many areas.
