Hurricane Rachel intensifies to Category 1 near Mexico's Pacific coast

Hurricane Rachel has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane in the Pacific, prompting emergency measures across Mexico's western coast. The storm maintains maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h and gusts up to 170 km/h. Its center was recently located approximately 350 km southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 570 km west of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán.

Heavy rainfall, ranging from 75 to 150 mm, is expected in Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero, creating significant risks of flooding, river overflows, and landslides. In Michoacán, authorities have suspended classes in seven municipalities, including Aquila, Lázaro Cárdenas, and Coalcomán, and have activated eight temporary shelters in Lázaro Cárdenas.

Maritime restrictions are in effect. Navigation is closed in the ports of Lázaro Cárdenas and Zihuatanejo, and in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes, and Tomatlán for smaller vessels due to high waves reaching up to 6 meters. In Manzanillo, navigation is permitted only for vessels exceeding 500 GT. Health authorities in Colima have also increased sanitary surveillance in areas affected by heavy rains to prevent health risks.
