Michoacán sees lake restoration projects and cemetery ground issues amid rains

The state government’s Temporary Employment Program has carried out extensive conservation work around Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán. This year, crews restored 42 new spring sources, treated 79 in total, and implemented soil‑conservation measures on 750 ha, built 280 earthen dams and 96 stone dams, and installed 190 filtration dams along main tributaries. Reforestation efforts include maintaining 420 ha of terraces and planting an estimated 2.5 million seedlings in the lake basin.

In the town of Zitácuaro, heavy rains have caused several tombs in the San Carlos municipal cemetery to sink. Cemetery officials say the problem is being addressed, with staff stabilising affected graves, clearing excess grass and weeds, and urging owners to settle any outstanding perpetual-use fees.
