Michoacán warns consumers of fraud as Hot Sale 2026 approaches

The consumer protection agency Profeco issued a set of precautions for the upcoming Hot Sale 2026, an online shopping event scheduled for May 25 – June 2. It urged shoppers to set a budget, verify website security (look for HTTPS and SSL certificates), avoid deals that seem too good to be true, and check product availability, delivery costs, return policies and guarantees before completing a purchase. Profeco also reminded consumers they can use its Virtual Store Monitoring and Commercial Bureau tools to review sellers and report deceptive advertising.

Separately, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Michoacán released an alert about extortion and fraud schemes that use false prize or contest announcements via phone calls, text messages and instant‑messaging apps. The criminals pressure victims to make bank deposits, share personal data or click on malicious links. The FGE advised people to hang up on suspicious calls, avoid opening unknown links, keep passwords and verification codes private, and report incidents through emergency lines 911 and 089.

Both agencies emphasized the importance of digital self‑care and the availability of reporting channels to curb scams during the sales period.
