North Macedonia seeks EU mediation in bilateral dispute with Bulgaria

North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has called for the involvement of the European Union to mediate a bilateral dispute between North Macedonia and Bulgaria. Mickoski stated that previous bilateral meetings between the two nations have failed to produce substantive results and characterized them as mere formalities. He argued that because a fundamental dispute exists, a multilateral organization like the EU is necessary to hear the arguments from both sides.

Bulgaria has maintained a preference for bilateral dialogue, suggesting that the involvement of a third party would serve as an admission that a bilateral dispute exists. Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova emphasized that North Macedonia must fulfill its existing commitments and maintain good neighborly relations as a necessary condition for its progress toward EU membership.

Mickoski further noted that the government will not enter an integration process that lacks a clear end goal or carries the risk of continuous new conditions and vetoes. Meanwhile, opposition leaders in North Macedonia have criticized the current administration, alleging that the government's policies are leading the country toward isolation and failing to meet the reforms required for EU accession.
