Mickoski claims North Macedonia faces artificial barriers to EU membership

North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski stated during an interview with the Atlantic Council that while EU membership should be based on merit, his country is facing artificial obstacles that prevent progress. He noted that despite meeting requirements, North Macedonia remains stuck due to bilateral issues and demands for further constitutional changes.

Mickoski criticized the previous government for attempting constitutional amendments to maintain power without achieving domestic results, which he claims placed the country in a difficult position regarding EU integration. He expressed concern that the process of meeting conditions feels endless, noting that after the change to the country's constitutional name, new requirements regarding the constitution have emerged.

The Prime Minister emphasized that North Macedonia's situation is unique, highlighting that the country began its integration process over 25 years ago, even preceding Croatia, yet remains in a similar position today. He stated that his current coalition government is working to overcome these hurdles while focusing on national development.
