Mickoski criticizes EU for betraying North Macedonia after concessions
North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has expressed frustration regarding the country’s path toward European Union membership. In an interview with Breitbart News, Mickoski stated that the nation has made numerous concessions to the EU, including changes to its constitution and identity, but claims that officials in Brussels have “betrayed and lied” to the country by imposing new conditions.
Mickoski described EU membership as a secondary goal following the country’s strategic partnership with the United States. He noted that after decades of efforts, including resolving disputes with Greece, the country now faces challenges regarding its relationship with Bulgaria.
The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) has criticized Mickoski’s stance, arguing that his rhetoric suggests a pivot away from Europe. SDSM maintains that EU membership and a strategic partnership with the U.S. are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, and they accused the Prime Minister of failing to complete promised reforms.
